Supreme Court did not order Maryam Nawaz to present her degree
The iVerify Pakistan team has reviewed this content and determined that it is false.
To reach this conclusion, the iVerify Pakistan team contacted Dawn.com reporter Abdullah Momand to corroborate the matter.
A post on social media platform Facebook on July 21, 2024, claimed that the Supreme Court was angered by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and had summoned her degree from her. However, nothing of the sort has occurred.
In a July 19 speech, CM Maryam had joined other PML-N leaders in criticising the eight sitting judges of the Supreme Court who allowed the PTI to reclaim its seats in parliament and provincial assemblies in their verdict for the reserved seats case.
The decision allowed the PTI to reclaim its seats in Parliament which deprived the PML-N-led government of a two-thirds majority in the House.
On July 22, the iVerify Pakistan team was requested via the website for authentication about a Facebook post with 73 likes.
The post, by a user who appeared to be a PTI supporter based on their past posts, said: “Supreme Court is angry. Summons degree from Maryam Nawaz.”
The post offered no other details such as the date of this alleged development or which judges issued the order or which educational degree was sought from the chief minister.
A fact check was initiated to satisfy the public’s demand for authentication regarding the claim as well as its serious nature regarding the apex court and the Punjab chief minister amid an already tense political atmosphere.
Contacting Dawn.com correspondent Abdullah Momand, who covers Supreme Court reporting, for corroboration, he said that no such development had occurred.
Moreover, an investigation of major news outlets also yielded no news story or report on the matter nor were any posts or statements found on the matter from PML-N or Punjab government spokespersons.
The claim regarding the Supreme Court ordering CM Maryam to submit her degree is false.
A Dawn.com correspondent confirmed there was no veracity to the matter and neither was it mentioned anywhere by the mainstream media or the PML-N or Punjab government.
