Posts from multiple social media users on October 24, 2024, claimed that religious scholar Mufti Tariq Masood was severely injured in a Karachi firing incident in which the driver was killed. However, Mufti Masood himself confirmed that nothing of the sort happened.

Mufti Masood is an Islamic scholar, known for his candid sermons with a large online following as he has 2.1 million followers on Facebook, 174.7k followers on X and 4.73 million subscribers on YouTube.

HOW IT STARTED

On October 24, a forwarded message on social platform WhatsApp by online news forum Click Daily News reported that Mufti Masood was critically injured in a firing incident.

The message read, “Firing on Mufti Tariq Masood Sahib’s car near Ghaghar Phatak area of ​​Karachi. As a result of the firing, the driver was killed whereas Mufti Tariq Masood was seriously injured, sources.”

Many users also shared the news and the same message of the firing incident on X as they shared collages of Mufti Masood and a car with bullet holes.

A post on X gained over 19,000 views and was shared 85 times. Similar claims about the alleged incident were made here, here and here.

METHODOLOGY

A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its high virality and the public’s keen interest in the scholar.

Checking his social media platform profiles to verify the claim and see if Mufti Masood’s team addressed the alleged incident yielded his statement regarding the reported injuries.

A post on X on October 24 said, “There are rumours of an attack on me. By the grace of God, I am perfectly well. There is no truth in this news.”

Similarly, an October 24 Facebook post also debunked the incident reports and said, “Mufti sahib is in good health. The attack rumours are false and baseless.”
