Posts from users on social media platform X since June 16, 2025, were claiming that the Afghan government has officially warned the United States against military intervention in Iran amid its conflict with Israel. However, the government of Afghanistan has not taken any such official step or issued any such statement or warning.
Nearly 80 people, including top army officers, were killed while civilians were among over 300 wounded in Iran as a result of Israel’s strikes on military sites and private residences on June 13. Iran subsequently launched its own retaliation with ballistic missiles fired at Israel and the two countries continued to exchange a volley over the weekend. Tensions have escalated since with more than 224 Iranians killed and over 1000 injured, most of them civilians. Israel says 24 people have been killed, mostly civilians.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly declined to say if the United States would participate in Israeli military action, although he has said Washington was not involved in initial strikes and the White House said that US forces remained in a defensive posture.
On June 16, Iranian news outlet Iran in Arabic claimed that Afghan authorities had made the following official announcement: “If the US coalition intervenes in the war with Iran, we will also take action.”
The post was accompanied by a graphic featuring the same quote.
It was viewed by 800,000 people.
The same claim was shared by a Russian account along with a video of a military convoy. It gained 1.7m views.
Other posts sharing the same claim can be found here, here, here and here, racking up 546,000, 161,000, 18,000 and 15,000 views.
A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its virality and keen public interest in the recent escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict.
A review of credible Iranian media outlets, such as Press TV, Tasnim and Fars News, and Afghan media outlets yielded no evidence of any statement from the Afghan authorities in support of Iran and warning the US against intervening in the conflict. Similarly, Afghan media outlets, including TOLOnews, Bakhtar News Agency and Pajhwok Afghan News, also did not report any such threat or announcement.
Nor did international media outlets report on any such development.
A keyword search for “Afghanistan” and “Iran” yielded a June 13 news story by Press TV compiling international condemnation of Israeli airstrikes.
According to the report, Afghan Taliban government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid condemned the Israeli aggression in a statement on X.
Mujahid’s full statement read: “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan unequivocally condemns the recent attacks by the Israeli regime on the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the assassination of Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists — acts that constitute a blatant violation of core principles of international law, particularly the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
“This act of aggression occurs at a time when the oppressed Palestinian population, especially in Gaza, continues to endure unrelenting and catastrophic assaults by Israel. The occupying regime persists in its violent actions with blatant disregard for humanitarian and international legal norms. Regrettably, such conduct, which exacerbates violence, has further deteriorated the regional situation and intensified concerns regarding its trajectory.
“The Islamic Emirate urges all concerned parties to discharge their responsibilities with due seriousness in preserving regional stability and security, and to prevent the further spread of insecurity and disorder across the region.”
The statement featured no mention of any warning to the US.
Checking the Taliban spokesperson’s timeline or the X timeline of Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi also yielded no such statement or announcement with any warning to the US.
Meanwhile, a reverse image search of the video accompanying the claim yielded a similar clip published by the AP Archive YouTube channel on August 19, 2024.
Further investigation yielded an Al Jazeera report from August 14, 2024, covering a Taliban military parade held to mark three years since the group’s return to power.
According to the report, the event showcased homemade bombs, fighter aircraft, and goose-stepping security forces.
The viral claim about Afghanistan allegedly officially threatening the US against military intervention in Iran is false.
The Afghan government has not made any such announcement or threat to the US.
